Visualize safer roads

Dear Editor:I attended the Oct. 25 ACRA Pre-Election Forum. I was very disappointed at the replies given by the two sheriff candidates to my question: “What are you going to do to make our roads safe?”Sheriff Braudis said his department has received praise from the Colorado State Police for doing a good job. He said that speed limits were set by engineers and that compliance was up to the drivers. Bob, get a clue! People have died on the roads in your county under your watch. RFTA buses are blatantly speeding on roads in your county. Dump trucks are running red lights because they are going too fast to slow down and stop. Two trucks turned over on Smith Way. How lucky no one was hurt!Candidate Magnuson must have blinders on, because he could only connect that getting drunk drivers off the roads will make the roads safer. Rick, drunk drivers are not the only ones who drive stupid. One thing I do agree with Magnuson on is that the sheriff’s office needs to get a deputy into our schools. The deputy needs to attend driver ed classes and let new drivers know that the Pitkin County Sheriff’s department has zero tolerance for aggressive/reckless driving. It is my hope that whomever Pitkin County elects into the sheriff’s office will give the issue of aggressive driving more attention. As adults, we are not being very good role models to our kids, and they are the ones I am most concerned about.Kim VieiraAspen
