Violence happens

Dear Editor:

Re: “Love is the solution” by John Hoffman, letters, Oct. 6:

There really is evil in the world. I only wish that your method worked. It didn’t work for the 6 million Jews, as they were led away to Nazi death camps, or for the Dalai Lama as he was forced to flee Tibet as his monks and monasteries were being murdered and laid waste. It didn’t work for the 3,000 people that died in the World Trade Center or for Daniel Pearl and Nick Berg as they were being beheaded or for the thousands of men, women and children that have been intentionally murdered because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when a car/truck bomb was intentionally detonated in Iraq. Even Jesus used violence against the moneychangers in the temple because they “defiled his father’s house.”

Even more mundane, I don’t think you would advocate releasing murders, rapists and thieves from prison to plunder society because the money saved could be used to help children’s health or SCHIP or some other worthy cause.

Evil must be resisted! As you state, our awareness/consciousness HAS been elevated by 9/11. I sincerely wish love were the answer. It would be so much less stress and anxiety.

Mike Mason
