Aspen Times Staff

The victim of the rollover accident on Highway 82 Thursday has been identified as Julian Gonzalez-Santillan, 28, of Carbondale.

Gonzalez-Santillan was killed when the car he was in swerved to avoid an injured dear on the highway and overturned. The driver, Humberto Chavez, 38, was taken to Valley View Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Chavez and Gonzalez-Santillan were driving to work from Carbondale toward Glenwood Springs at 5:30 a.m. when they encountered the deer in the right lane. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the deer had been struck by a person in a Subaru. That motorist did not report the crash nor clear the deer from the roadway. Chavez swerved to the right and lost control of his car, skidding out of control off the right side of the road.

Gonzalez-Santillan was pronounced dead at the scene.
