Various Snowmass trails closed for elk

SNOWMASS ” Several trail closures are in effect at Snowmass to protect calving elk in May and June.

Human disturbance can impact the animals during this period and lead to the abandonment of calving areas, according to the town. Anyone who encounters a calf by itself should not touch it, the town advises. The cow is feeding; the calf is not abandoned.

The seasonal trail closures, April 25 to June 20, are in effect on the Government Trail, Tom Blake Trail, Anaerobic Nightmare and Sequel Trail. They all open to human use on June 21.

Other trails in the Snowmass Village area remain open to use. They include Starks, the Owl Creek Trail, Village Way, Brush Creek Trail, Mountain View to Rim Trail South, the Sleigh Trail and the Ditch Trail.
