Utah searchers find body, car in river after crash

Aspen, CO Colorado

MOAB, Utah ” Divers on Monday found the body of a 5-year-old Colorado girl and the car she was riding in when the vehicle plunged into the icy Colorado River near the western Utah town of Moab.

The car went off the road, plunged down a 60-foot canyon and fell into the river Friday afternoon.

Authorities say the driver, 60-year-old Evelyn Maestas of the southwestern Colorado town of Mancos, and her 11-year-old adopted daughter, Tori, were able to escape through a window and get out of the river.

They told authorities they saw Maestas’ granddaughter, 5-year-old Danica, also of Mancos, still inside the Nissan as it sank.

Family members have since been holding vigil at the crash site on State Highway 128.

Crews started searching for the car and the girl on Friday. They resumed early Saturday, walking the river’s shoreline and using the sonar technology to scour the bottom of the murky river.

Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol said divers found the vehicle late Monday afternoon. He said crews found it farther downstream than expected after expanding their search.

“We hope it brings the family some closure,” Roden said.

The girl was found inside the vehicle but out of her seat belt.

Authorities have said Maestas and the 11-year-old girl suffered from hypothermia and were taken to the hospital after Friday’s crash. Their condition wasn’t immediately available Monday night.
