Using the official playbook

Dear Editor:(Re: “The pulpit is not the place for politicking,” Aspen Times editorial, Nov. 5.)What Father O’Brien and members of the Catholic hierarchy have done to John Kerry in this presidential election reminds me of what one 13th-century bishop of Toulouse did to an old woman who dared defy him by converting to the Albigensian heresy on her deathbed. The good bishop had her carried out to a nearby field in her sickbed and burned alive. It can be argued that the old French lady would soon have died from natural causes anyway, just as it is probably true that Father O’Brien and his clerical associates had very little to do with Kerry’s political demise and were not necessarily taking their cues from Karl Rove. They didn’t have to: Who needs Karl Rove when you’ve got the whole official playbook of the Holy Inquisition at your disposal?Joel BrenceAspen
