Unbury those fire hydrants

While the snowstorms are taking a respite, the Basalt Fire Department is urging homeowners to work together to unbury hydrants in their neighborhoods.

Basalt and Snowmass Village Fire Chief Scott Thompson said he has seen some fire hydrants buried under snow plowed from roads. The fire department needs to access the water supplies quickly in case of a fire. Thompson said unburying hydrants is an issue throughout the Roaring Fork Valley because of the above average snowfall.

“I would like to ask for the public’s help. If they can’t unbury their hydrant, they can certainly call their local fire department for assistance,” Thompson said. “We do not have the staff to dig out all the hydrants but we can certainly help.”
