U.S. Rep. John Salazar named to House panel

The Associated Press
Aspen, CO Colorado

DENVER ” Colorado Democratic Rep. John Salazar says he’s been appointed to the powerful House Appropriations Committee, which all but eliminates him from consideration to be secretary of agriculture.

Salazar said last week he might be under consideration for the Cabinet seat, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus supported him for the job.

But Salazar said Wednesday he never asked to be agriculture secretary and that he’s happy to be joining the Appropriations Committee.

He will become the first Colorado House member to sit on the budget-writing committee in several decades. With the departure of New Mexico Rep. Tom Udall, who is going to the Senate, Salazar will be the only member from the Rocky Mountain region.
