Two letters worth further discussion
The Saturday, Sept.10, issue of the Aspen Times included two excellent letters, one by Jim Markalunas and one by Jerry Bovino on different subjects.
Jim, your letter about the bureaucrats in Aspen hit the nail right on the head! It’s remarkable how the City Council is only interested in growth and becoming bigger landlords than they are now and not doing anything to stop spending and building monuments to themselves! It is also amazing how they and the county commissioners want to change the rules when their terms are ending. They are elected by one but want to grandfather in rule changes to get another term and benefit their own cause!
Jerry, your letter about plastic bags and how consumers will have to pay a tax on each bag had some good thoughts about that idea. There is one point that comes into my mind when thinking about grocery shopping bags and that is, what about the other sources of plastic bags? Almost 100 percent of retail stores give out plastic bags so we can carry home our purchases and anything else you can think of! I have never heard anyone mention these sources of plastic bags. Let’s ban all plastic bags, not just at grocery stores!
I would like to remind the mayors of Aspen and Snowmass of one thing: Just remember, when you attend a council meeting you both sit in a chair, not a throne!
