Two hurt in crash, propane tank bursts

Aspen Times Staff Report

Two people were hurt Friday and a neighborhood was evacuated when a vehicle crashed into a propane tank north of Glenwood Springs.

Stephen Truskoski, 24, Glenwood Springs, was driving a Jeep Wagoneer on Country Road 132 (Mitchell Road) when the vehicle drifted off the road for close to 17 feet and struck the tank. The Wagoneer was launched into the air for some 41 feet and rotated for one-quarter of a turn before colliding with a large tree, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

After the impact, the vehicle spun halfway around and collided with a second tree about five feet away.

The accident occurred at about 7:15 p.m.

Truskoski was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs with a broken pelvis and cuts. His sister, 18-year-old Catherine Truskoski of Glenwood, was a passenger in the vehicle. She was also taken to Valley View with possible internal injuries and cuts, according to the patrol.

Residents in the vicinity of the tank, about two miles north of Glenwood Springs, were evacuated from their homes for several hours due to the large amount of propane released into the air and the potential fire hazard from the leaking gas, according to the patrol.

No alcohol use is suspected. The driver was charged with careless driving causing bodily injury and having no proof of insurance.
