Two Colorado men who died from medical incidents at Keystone ID’d

Two men who died after medical incidents at Keystone Resort this week have been identified as 53-year-old Daniel Mares of Arvada and 66-year-old Durwood Marshall of Silverthorne.

On Dec. 22, Mares was found unconscious and not breathing at the bottom of a run at the resort, and was transported to the Keystone Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

On Dec. 25, Marshall was also discovered unconscious on a trail, and was transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

Both deaths were the result of medical events related to cardiac issues, according to Summit County Coroner Regan Wood.

The deaths represent the second and third fatalities stemming from ski resorts in Summit County this year. Daniel Giger, a 21-year-old University of Colorado Boulder student, was killed following a collision with a tree at Breckenridge Ski Resort on Dec. 16.

In addition to three deaths in Summit County, there have been at least two other skier deaths this season.

Bindu Pomeroy, 44, was killed snowboarding in the Vail backcountry late last month after landing headfirst jumping off a cliff. Bill Brockmueller, 26, passed away at Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital on Dec. 10, six days after colliding with a tree at Eldora Mountain Resort.
