Tunnel vision

Dear Editor:

Can someone please help me understand Pitkin County engineers’ thought process? You sit at the Aspen airport red light all day long. You observe 251 people cross the street either on the pedestrian walk or illegally over the median. And your most intelligent solution to the problem is building a $3 million underpass?

Let me help you with this brain-buster. Have all lights turn red while the pedestrian signal to walk is on! Wow, that was difficult. Wouldn’t this be a good idea to try first before the city of Aspen gouges the taxpayers once again? Do you really think that the pedestrians who are too lazy to walk to the crosswalk are going to take the time to walk to the tunnel? I bet $3 billion they’re not.
