Tunnel around the canyon

Dear Editor:Last week’s rock slide that blocked Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon should be a wake-up call to building a new road that totally bypasses Glenwood Springs and Canyon altogether for those driving from Aspen to Denver. Starting at El Jebel near the new City Market area, there should be a new four-lane road that cuts northeast under that mesa to I-70 near Eagle, creating a new Glenwood Canyon bypass and an I-70 emergency detour, should Glenwood Canyon be blocked by rock slides and accidents. With the new four-laned Highway 82 completed from Aspen to Glenwood Springs, this would cut the drive from Aspen to Denver almost 50 miles by not having to drive through busy Glenwood Springs and windy Glenwood Canyon. The new road could include just a 10-mile-long, flat tunnel under that mesa that lies between El Jebel and Eagle/Gypsum, where I-70 is. Kevin SwalesColumbus, Ohio(former Aspen resident)
