Tsunami benefit event tonight

Aspen Times Staff

A local photographer will hold a slide show tonight at Paepcke Auditorium to raise funds for relief efforts in the tsunami-ravaged country of Sri Lanka.

Aspen-based photographer Trent Burkholder, who is married to Sri Lankan pianist and activist Preethi Burkholder, will present around 150 slides from the couple’s numerous trips to the island country.

The slide show will take place at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15. The fund-raiser will benefit Asafo Global Medical Fund, an Arizona-based nonprofit organization that transports medical supplies to places in need.

Sri Lanka, a country of some 20 million off the southern tip of India, was devastated by seismic waves Sunday following an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The Red Cross estimates around 25,000 dead. Certain sections of the country, particularly the northeastern coast, have been particularly hard hit.

After the fund-raiser, the Burkholders will travel to Sri Lanka to help aid workers.

“As soon as we can raise the money, I am planning to go over there and help out,” Preethi said. “Whole portions of the country have been washed out, including most of the hospitals along the eastern coast.”
