Transportation task forces get a vote

Citizen volunteers who have spent countless hours studying transportation options in the Roaring Fork Valley have been granted a seat on an important local advisory committee. The Roaring Fork Railroad Holding Authority policy committee agreed Friday that it should be expanded. It will now include representatives from four citizens task forces that have been studying rail and bus options for the valley. The citizens task forces and policy committee are two of four groups in the decision-making chain at the holding authority. At the bottom of the chain are the task forces, which are located in the upper valley, midvalley, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.Next comes the regional task force, comprised of two members from each local task force who consider recommendations from their groups and pass them on to the policy committee. The policy committee then makes recommendations to the holding authority’s board of directors, which issues final decisions. The holding authority is a public agency funded by several local governments. It owns the former Denver & Rio Grande right of way between Glenwood and Aspen. The board of directors is comprised solely of elected officials from local governments. The task force members are seeking seats on the policy committee, because they believe it would improve communication between the two bodies.
