Transient found dead under overpass
PITKIN COUNTY A 63-year-old transient man living in a semipermanent camp under the Highway 82 overpass near Shale Bluffs died Tuesday. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death and would not release the name pending notification of next of kin. There will be an autopsy, but police said witnesses reported that the deceased had health problems. Lead investigator Ron Ryan said there is no reason to suspect foul play in the investigation so far.”The deceased man has been around for a while,” Ryan said. “He’s known to some of us. But he is not originally from around here.”Ryan said three men have been living under the bridge for quite some time and that the camp was permanent enough to have been built more than a year ago. There were plywood beds and other furniture. One of the men living in the camp left in the morning, when he said the 63-year-old was alive, and returned to find the man dead. He flagged down a car at the Snowmass intercept lot, and the driver called police from a cell phone. Ryan said none of the men owned vehicles, and it was unclear if any of them worked in the valley. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office has secured a place for the other two men to stay for the next few nights as the camp area has been sealed off as a crime scene.”We have no interest at this time in investigating their camping or trespass under the bridge,” Ryan said. “We have helped them get shelter tonight.”Joel Stonington’s e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org
