Tranquilizer trial will be no sleeper

ASPEN A lawsuit alleging wrongdoing by valley law enforcement will likely go to trial after the rejection of a $2,400 settlement by plaintiff Bronwyn Anglin. Anglin, a Basalt resident, said Thursday she was forcibly tranquilized while in the Pitkin County Jail after a wrongful arrest on Dec. 11, 2004. Police records, which several officers and a sheriff’s deputy filed, describe Anglin as drunk, violent and out of control on an already busy night at the jail. The lawsuit was filed Aug. 11, 2006 in U.S. District Court in Denver. Because of the large number of defendants it names – the city of Aspen, numerous Aspen police officers and Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies, Aspen Valley Hospital, a doctor and two paramedics – the case is moving through the legal system slowly. A preliminary pretrial order filed Thursday in District Court revealed eight depositions yet to go, stretching into mid-April. A trial date has yet to be set. “It was probably premature because the deposition process is still ongoing,” Anglin said. “As a result, they made a fairly ludicrous settlement offer. Combined, they offered $2,400.It’s difficult with so many attorneys trying to proceed as a unit.”Lawyers representing various parties were not available to comment late Thursday.
