Trail construction to impact travel on Highway 133
November 6, 2009
CARBONDALE – Installation of a guard rail along the Crystal Trail, which is now under construction next to Highway 133 south of Carbondale, will require periodic lane closures during the week of Nov. 9.
The trail work is expected to continue into late November. The 5.3-mile stretch of trail is being constructed from the vicinity of the Carbondale fire station to the BRB Campground. When it’s done, the asphalt trail will be 8 feet wide, with an additional 4 feet of soft surface where there’s room, allowing bicyclists and pedestrians to travel the corridor on a trail that is separate from the speedy traffic on the highway.
The Pitkin County Open Space and Trails Program is funding the lion’s share of the $3 million project, with help from a $1 million Great Outdoors Colorado Grant. The Town of Carbondale has contributed nearly $400,000 and Garfield County kicked in another $200,000. A $50,000 contribution from the Jelenick family will go toward Garfield County’s share of the costs.
