Traffic experiment

Dear Editor:

I think everyone would agree that the reason drivers elect to go through the West End versus waiting on Main Street is due to the bottleneck created by the line of cars exiting the city between approximately 3 and 6 p.m. The culprit is the Cemetery Lane traffic light during those hours. How about trying something you see in major cities?

Have a policeman or a trained person work the light at Cemetery Lane manually between 3 and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, forcing cars that want to turn left from Cemetery Lane onto Highway 82 to turn right and go through the roundabout in order to go toward town. The operator would allow cars turning from Highway 82 onto Cemetery Lane by manually changing the light when enough time has elapsed to allow a substantial number of vehicles to pass through the intersection heading downvalley.

Doing the math – 32 weeks (winter and summer) times three hours per day (Monday through Friday) times $30 an hour (not sure on this number) equals $2,880 a year.

I am not a traffic engineer, but I certainly think a test to see if this would work would be prudent. Imagine, if it worked, how relieved the West End residents would be along with the people in traffic. The city could save about $36,000 per year based on its cost analysis in the paper.
