Town to Town tour put off to Feb. 19

ASPEN – The Town to Town Tour, a nordic skiing/snowshoe tour from Aspen to Basalt, is now scheduled for Feb. 19.

The tour had been set for Jan. 22, but lack of snow on the Rio Grande Trail, particularly in the midvalley, forced the postponement.

The Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, which hosts the tour, made the call on Monday, and was busy e-mailing volunteers and participants who have already registered to let them know of the change of plans, said David Hamilton, executive director of RFOV. Anyone who paid to take part in a Jan. 22 tour, but is unavailable on Feb. 19, will receive a refund, he said.

The tour is to return for its third running this year, after taking a year off in 2010 when the recession made fundraising a challenge.

“To put it off until next year just didn’t feel right,” Hamilton said. “I think the odds are in our favor that we’ll have it.”

The tour will take participants from Rio Grande Park in Aspen (or an alternate start in Woody Creek) down the trail to Basalt High School, where shuttles will be offered to take participants into downtown Basalt for the post-tour party, featuring food provided by local restaurants.
