ASPEN ” You don’t have to be a ski racer to be, well, a ski racer, in Aspen.

The 27th season of the Aspen Times Town Race Series kicks off Saturday, Dec. 30 at Aspen Highlands with a free race clinic.

The clinic, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be led by Mike Tache and Chip Chilson, along with other local coaches. Interested participants can sign up at Crust, the restaurant in Aspen Highlands Village, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on clinic day.

An apres party will follow the clinic at Zane’s Tavern (formerly McStorlies) in Aspen at 4 p.m. Prize drawings, snacks and free beer will be provided.

The series has long been open to all ” competitors include skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders, from novice to expert. Experienced skiers compete in the advanced league on Saturdays. Snowboarders, telemarkers and novice skiers compete in the recreational division on Sundays. In short, the Town Race Series offers locals a way to improve their skills and “have a ball doing it,” said Scott Nichols, race coordinator, of the Aspen Skiing Co.
