Torre: I’m in for mayor

ASPEN ” Aspen City Councilman Torre announced Thursday that he is running for mayor in the May election, putting an end to any speculation that he would try to retain the seat he currently holds.

“I am seeking the office of mayor to continue fighting for a better Aspen and to represent the citizens and community both here at home and in our valley and beyond,” said Torre in a statement issued at approximately 4 p.m. “I have always been a ‘politician of the people’ and want to bring a greater connection and open forum to council and City Hall. I strongly believe in a representative government that functions best without personal agendas and with community input.”

Torre’s announcement came a week after Mick Ireland, a former county commissioner, and Tim Semrau, a former city councilman, went public with their intentions to run.

Ireland and Semrau are considered the front-runners by many local political observers, but not Torre.

“I am the best candidate,” he said. “I believe in Aspen. I know Aspen’s vote can’t be bought, or networked. I know that Aspenites can’t be sold on some PR spun, fabricated campaign. We seek truth, fairness, and above all respect for each other and our town.”

Torre’s council seat is up for election in May, as well. His mayoral bid means he can’t seek re-election as a council member.

Torre also announced that he will have a parade Friday at 4:30 p.m., starting at his “campaign headquarters” across the street from the Wheeler Opera House. The parade will finish at the Blue Maize restaurant at 5:30 p.m., where he plans to play host to a meet and greet.
