Too much meddling by City Council

Dear Editor:

I lived in Aspen for many years and would frequently rent my house over the holidays. Suddenly, with the advent of three new luxury hotels, it became difficult it not impossible to continue these rentals.

Did I go running to City Council to punish these new, competing properties that precluded me from rental? Of course not.

Now we have a movement to license and tax property owners for privately renting their properties.

This seems like another “money grab” by city government. The lodging community is joining the action. One councilman who may have commercial ties to the lodging industry wants everyone to pay a “fair share.”

Since when do private homeowners have to pay a fair share and play by the same rules as hotels and lodges?

City Council continues to make pointless, costly and unneeded regulations. They are used and manipulated by commercial interests to thwart perceived competition. Council, stick to your mandate of providing basic services and stop performing as an ideological “think tank.”
