Toni’s letter to Santa
Dear Editor:My wish to Santa in 2004 was for an outdoor swimming pool at the Aspen Recreation Center. Voters in Aspen shared the wish in November 2005 with funding approval. This year, my wish probably is shared with over a million skiers/snowboarders who ski the “Power of Aspen/Snowmass’s four mountains,” the daily 20,000-plus drivers of cars coming in and out of Aspen, the 25,000 residents of Aspen/Pitkin County, and the nearly one million (how many?!?!) expected new affordable housing residents, second-family homeowners and time-share owners. It’s really a very simple wish: we just want to be able to get in and out of Aspen quicker than it would take us to fly from Denver to Aspen. How can we make this wish come true?Santa, we need someone we can talk to who will listen, discuss and act on very good solutions to the environmentally unfriendly and time consuming entrance to Aspen.Attempting to speak to Aspen City Council about solutions to traffic gridlock while Mayor Klanderud is conducting the meeting, most of us, who keep up with The Aspen Times and the Aspen Daily News, have read, the “gadfly” are told to sit down and shut up as “traffic or whatever” is not on the agenda. Santa, please send Rudolph and your elves from the North Pole to Aspen in a hurry to make wishes a reality. The “wish” list:• Aspen has the power of four mountains; now it’s time to connect the four mountains aerially (get those cars off the road),• Four lane is needed, not across Marolt Open Space, but along the existing Highway 82 from the wormhole at Buttermilk to Main Street/Aspen (25 mph). It can be done, this is the 21st century.• Bus-only lane is desperately needed on Main Street for outgoing afternoon traffic, as well as two lanes for outbound traffic (it’s already there). • Park and ride the bus for free from Brush Creek intercept lot to Aspen and Snowmass.• Parking shelter/garage.It can be done. It needs to be done. Maybe, Mayor Pro-Tem and council member Torre, who always listens, is willing to discuss and implement solutions with the public, can work with the elves and Rudolph to jump start the solutions.Ideas anyone?
