Tom’s memory lives on

One of the defining qualities of Tom Peirce was his desire to see people succeed in following their dreams. Most of his friends knew him as someone who took interest in their lives and did whatever he could to help them move forward.

Tom’s own life was his own invention and, at a young age, he took chances and found adventure. Mostly he wanted to share his joy and curiosity for living and was forever meeting new friends. Tom left a mark on all of us.

In that spirit, a few of his friends have established a memorial scholarship fund to help young people from Tom’s home, the Aspen-Roaring Fork Valley area, succeed in the pursuit of their dreams.

We believe that, through this scholarship fund, a part of Tom’s generosity and enthusiasm for life and his deep commitment to serving his community will be continued.

The fund will be in Tom’s name and will be administered by the Aspen Valley Community Foundation, a highly respected organization in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Our hope is to raise sufficient funds to create a significant endowment generating annual gifts large enough to make a real difference in a young person’s life and, by extension, in the local community and the world community at large.

Every year a committee, named by the foundation and comprised in part of Tom’s friends, family and local educators, will select a high school applicant from the Roaring Fork Valley who has demonstrated a desire and ability to learn, a spirit of adventure, and the makings of a strong social conscience.

Other criteria the committee will be evaluating include scholastic achievement, community involvement, school activities and environmental concern as well as financial need.

Scholarship funds will be earmarked toward areas of study which would help equip the student to make a mark in the world. These would include education, community, national and world affairs, cultural interchange, and environmental and conservation efforts. All were foremost among Tom’s interests.

With the support of Tom’s friends, many deserving young people will be given the opportunity they need to make a difference in the world, as they each set forth on their life’s journey. The Tom Peirce Memorial Scholarship Fund will be a bridge between the life of our late good friend and the generations to come.

‘Aspen’ pure?

Dear Editor:

Now let’s see if I’ve got this straight:

Alamosa water disingenuously portrayed as “Aspen Pure” is the “logical choice” to sell at the Wheeler?

Aren’t there laws regarding truth in advertising? And, what about the sleaze and ethics of those who co-opt and misrepresent the name of their hometown for personal gain?

P.S. The truth is that Snowmass water is deliciously world-class and that chemically flavored Aspen water is barely fit for toilet flushing. I spend $300 a year for bottled H20 because Aspen tap water is undrinkable.

Could we help our tattered reputation as world-class resort by providing our residents and tourists with truly pure, tasty and indigenous high-altitude H20 “100 percent authentic “Aspen Pure”?

Think local, sell global.
