Tired of the nasty online comments

Dear Editor:

I used to like reading the Times’ online forums, but they’ve gotten so stratified and predictable that before I even finish a letter or an article, I know what people are going to say. Most of it is accusatory, mean spirited and some comments are filled with crude personal attacks.

I read comments on Friday about Andrew Kole and Marilyn Marks that were especially nasty – don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending either one of these people, but honestly, those online comments were just plain rude, personal and unnecessary. (By the way, I’m taking bets on the comments that will show up because of this sentence.)

I’m really sad to see this huge lack of civility going on in these forums. People, this is the Internet – all of your nasty comments can be read by everyone out there – even potential visitors. The next time you decide rant anonymously, think about the message you are sending to the world at large, not just the target of your ire. If you can’t get your point across without a personal attack, then perhaps you don’t have a point to make at all.

All I can say is, the place that some of you online posters are portraying is certainly not amenable to a “tourist based economy” and as far as I can tell, it’s certainly not Aspen.
