Times missed the message

Dear Editor:After listening to the wonderful Aug. 1 Sunday concert at the tent, I walked to the Paepcke Auditorium for the panel discussion on the Middle East.As I had expected, all seats had been taken. I thought myself very fortunate when I realized that I would be able to hear every word of the panel discussion, including the public Q & A, through the loudspeaker system installed by the Institute on their front lawn. The message was inspirational and full of hope: There’s possibility for peace in the Middle East if we truly believe in and promote it, and focus on the future rather than on the past; gather our efforts to ensure that a hopefully-soon-to-be-created state of Palestine will have strong institutions and an economic base to support its people; and continue helping Israel preserve its security.I was shocked and disheartened when I read Eben Harrell’s article (Aspen Times, Aug. 2), about the shortage of seats for us locals. Was he so unfazed by the fact that he couldn’t have a seat in the auditorium that he obliterated the message? Or does he have a private agenda?I wish we had more positive people like The Aspen Institute’s panelists passing encouraging messages, instead of reporters spewing demagogic criticism. Are you listening, Aspen Times?Lenir DrakeAspen
