Times coverage of Mulcahy firing was unfair
It is with disappointment that I read the coverage of Lee Mulcahy’s firing in today’s Aspen Times (“Aspen Skiing Co. fires rogue ski instructor,” Feb. 2, 2011). Your newspaper is being used as a vehicle for spreading lies, unfounded accusations, and a smear campaign against Aspen Skiing Co. on Lee Mulcahy’s behalf. To clarify, we terminated Lee for his repeated failure to exercise good judgment as a Pro representing Aspen Skiing Co. and more broadly this entire community. Lee had no problems with our rates of pay and did not engage in any letter writing campaigns until after he was notified that we had grave concerns about his performance which date back to 2006. Below are a few examples:
1. In 2006 Lee harassed an employee so egregiously that the Town of Snowmass Village Police were called and disciplinary action was taken.
2. In February of 2010 he took an AVSC class of young girls out of bounds and used abusive language toward them, again disciplinary action was taken.
3. In April 2010 a guest of Aspen Skiing Company notified us that Lee charged a private lesson to his credit card without his authorization.
Aspen Skiing Company is not putting up any kinds of smokescreen as you claimed in your article and the points above are just a few examples of how Lee has failed to meet the standards of performance expected of our Ski and Snowboard Pros. Lee filed his claims with the NLRB, waged the letter writing campaign, and formed People For a Living Wage as a desperate act to save his job as demonstrated by a review of the timeline of events. Lee made several other erroneous statements, which went undisputed in your article. I respectfully request that going forward, your newspaper give us the opportunity to respond to false claims that are made about us, rather than simply re-printing them as fact.
