Time for Aspen to move forward

Dear Editor:

When I first came to Aspen in 1956 lots on Main Street near the Miner’s Building were selling for $2,000 per lot. (Unfortunately, I was $1,800 short.) Side stepping up Little Nell on skis for ski lessons was the norm. The hottest night spot in town, and virtually the only one, was the Red Onion. Access was primarily by car or train or thumbing a ride. It was a time for wooden skis, laced boots and ski bums. And, there was essentially no summer life as we know it today.

Aspen has grown since those days and we have made remarkable progress. We now have probably the best combination of town, ski areas and snow of any place in the world. This was all brought about, let’s face it, by the influx of money and people with the desire to build a better place. So many wonderful changes have been made and they have been due to people looking forward, not backward.

A few would like to see the old Aspen return. That was a different life and a different time. We’ve moved on to a modern world that the vast majority would prefer. It’s like the old adage about riding a bicycle: If you don’t move forward you’ll fall over. It is time for Aspen to again move forward, just to keep what is here now. These are difficult times and we need progressive people running the show. From what I have experienced, Marilyn Marks is the person who would be best suited for mayor of Aspen. To make this happen, all registered voters should join forces and elect Ms. Marks. Aspen, as well as the valley, needs her.
