Thumbs up to Skadron, Daily and Mullins

Dear Editor:

As a result of the upcoming city election, there will be a shift in leadership on the Aspen City Council. The three candidates we are endorsing will lead Aspen in a new and balanced direction while preserving the small-town character of downtown Aspen.

For mayor of Aspen, we support Steve Skadron. In addition to serving on the Aspen City Council, Steve has built his own ad agency and is an adjunct professor at the Isaacson School of Digital Media at Colorado Mountain College. He has a Master of Business Administration degree with a finance concentration, serves as the vice president of the Colorado Association of Ski Towns and chairman of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency board, and is a board member of the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority. We agree with Steve’s policy of approving buildings of a mass and scale in line with Aspen’s character that preserve downtown Aspen’s mountain view planes. Through our observations of Steve’s work on the City Council, we believe he will be a thoughtful decision-maker and will listen to the voters of Aspen.

For the two open City Council seats, we support Ann Mullins and Art Daily.

Ann is a mom with a diverse background. She has 30 years of business experience in which she grew a two-person business into a 50-person landscape-architecture firm in Denver. In addition to her design work, Ann is an accomplished skier, and when she moved back to Aspen, she became a ski instructor at Buttermilk. Ann also values preserving Aspen’s downtown character and believes that this preservation must be achieved in a thoughtful manner. As Ann says, “With my experience in urban design, I am aware of all the interconnected components that need to work together to allow a city to grow, preserving the best of the past while creating a positive future.” Additionally, in a town where women make up more than half of the electorate, we believe that it will be beneficial to have a female voice on the Aspen City Council.

Art has been an Aspen resident for more than 45 years. He came to Aspen as a young attorney to help open the branch office of the Denver law firm of Holland and Hart. He has been an integral part of the Aspen legal community ever since, including a stint as part-time city attorney. Art and his wife, Allison, are very involved in the community, and together they have two sons in the Aspen public schools. Art’s daughter, Piper, wrote it beautifully: “My father has spent the last forty-five years creating healthy relationships with many elements of our community and has established roots that are secure in our community.” Art’s longtime Aspen residency makes him keenly aware of the importance of keeping Aspen’s small-town character. Through his legal background, intellect and love of Aspen, he will strike a balance among competing interests and provide thoughtful governance for our wonderful town.

We wish to remind people that absentee voting already has begun for the May 7 mayoral and City Council elections. In order to vote absentee, eligible Aspen voters should go to the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall across from Peach’s Cafe. (Applications for absentee voting must be picked up before May 3.)

Please consider voting for Steve Skadron for Aspen mayor and Ann Mullins and Art Daily for Aspen City Council.

Blanca and Cavanaugh O’Leary
