David Frederick Riley’s aprés art reception and painting demonstration
Aspen Grove Fine Art hosts David Frederick Riley in an art reception and painting demonstration from 4-8 p.m., March 14. Riley is a Western and wildlife portrait artist from Utah. The gallery will also display his newest artwork.
“Viewers love to admire his talent and chat with the artist as he works on his easel to complete his latest masterpiece and get a glimpse of what goes into a work of art as it approaches completion. Each portrait tells a story, whether wildlife such as bison, elk or wolves, or rugged western icons like Clint Eastwood or Willie Nelson. Riley’s monochromatic soft style is unique and complements both classic or modern mountain homes,” according to the gallery’s press release.

‘Papsura: Peak of Evil‘ film screening and slideshow
At 7:30 p.m., March 14 at TACAW, photographer, and principal cinematographer Blake Gordon provides a slideshow presentation and conversation, after the screening of “Papsura: Peak of Evil.”
Tucked deep in the Indian Himalaya is a 21,100-foot behemoth called Papsura, the face of which is split by a line so perfect and massive it pushed the skills of even the most renowned ski mountaineers. The film follows professional snowboarders Nick Russell and Jerry Mark from California’s Sierra Nevada to this remote corner of the world’s greatest mountain range, as they harness years of experience in pursuit of the biggest line of their lives. tacaw.org

Poster design contest for 54th Mountain Fair now open

The 54th Annual Carbondale Mountain Fair poster design contest is now open.

Submission deadline is April 1. A jury selects the winning design, and the team works with the finalist to create the poster and T-shirt. Winner receives $1,000 and five t-shirts! Lynch In Focus: ‘Lost Highway’
At 7 p.m., March 17, Aspen Film presents David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” at the AF Isis Theatre.
The 1997 film delves into a mind-bending world of identity and reality. The story follows jazz saxophonist Fred Madison (Bill Pullman), who is accused of murdering his wife, Renee (Patricia Arquette), after receiving mysterious videotapes showing someone filming inside their home. While on death row, Fred inexplicably transforms into a young mechanic named Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty), whose life becomes entangled with a gangster’s girlfriend—also played by Arquette. Anderson Ranch Arts Center’s visiting artist Noelle Choy will give a talk from 4:30-5:30 p.m., March 20. Choy will be at Anderson Ranch from March 18-28.
Choy’s work lives mostly as performative objects and video to seek counter-narratives in cultural mythmaking and the phenomenon of getting big inside our bodies. Often working in collaboration, she uses improvised methods and materials to distort biographies, thinking about reenactment and the celebration in closeness.
