This isn’t the prom

Dear Editor:

I am supporting Mick Ireland’s re-election for mayor of Aspen because he is the strongest and most capable advocate of the values Aspen has held dear for many decades now: a sustainable economy capable of weathering boom and bust cycles; managed growth that allows appropriately scaled development consistent with small-town character; a strong environmental ethic; an affordable housing program matched by no other resort in this country; and a real community, one that includes and welcomes people of all walks of life.

If you care about the environment, growth control, affordable housing and a sustainable Aspen (economically and socially), then Mick is your only choice for mayor. Mick understands and lives Aspen’s values; he has spent several decades working tirelessly to effect those values, which is, in many respects, why Aspen still is a wonderful place today.

Those who would try to make this election about something other than Aspen’s values through buzzword incantations of “civility” and “transparency” do Aspen a disservice by trivializing this important race. This isn’t the prom, and we aren’t electing a prom king or queen for mayor of Aspen. We need someone who is tough, smart and principled enough to navigate us through these difficult financial times and increasingly complex land-use issues ” without sacrificing our core values.

Please vote for Mick on May 5.
