Think globally, tax locally

Dear Editor:

Last week I renewed the registration on my 400cc motorcycle, tax due $69.61. Last month I renewed the registration on my gas-guzzling 3.2 litre V6, double overhead cam, 1998 SUV, tax due $70.87.

Every day we wake up to the news on the leaking oil rig and we poo-poo BP executive Tony “I want my life back” Hayward, or we hold Barack accountable for the spill. Meanwhile, locally we do nothing to increase our incentive to get off the Oil Tit, which we all seem so addicted to. Gas at the pumps is HALF what people pay in Europe.

When I contacted our county clerk, I was referred to the state Legislature in Denver, so “think globally, act locally” is deferred to others, in this respect.

I would sincerely love to see a tax levied at the pumps, which could be applied toward research and development of alternative energy fuels. Anyone else?
