The truth about taxes
Dear Editor:Responding to Mr. Kesslers letter regarding the treasonous behavior of the U.S. Supreme Court in refusing to hear a petition concerning having to file an income tax return (letters, Jan. 19), the 16th Amendment to the Constitution apparently covers this. While the amendment does not specify how the tax is to be collected, it does give the federal government the legal right to collect income taxes. The precise means appears to be moot as far as the Supreme Court is concerned. I take it that they have bigger fish to fry.Amendment XVI:The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration.Phil BurnettAspen
