The ‘Stube is back

Dear Editor:

I wouldn’t typically write a letter to the editor regarding a restaurant, but I feel this one deserves notice. Nearly 40 years ago my husband came to Aspen and immediately found a home at the Wienerstube Restaurant.

Being Austrian, as were the owners-chefs, Gerhard and Helmut of the Wienerstube, it was a natural. As time went on, and we married and had children, the Wienerstube was an integral part of our family Sundays, early work breakfasts, special occasions and always when we had company in town.

Times changed, and as we lost Helmut, and then when Gerhard retired, well, the ‘Stube just wasn’t the same. However, I am happy to share that “the ‘Stube is back,” to quote my husband.

The new owner, Harald Neuweg, also an Austrian, has refurbished the interior and combined the old with the new on the menu.

We have had a wonderful dinner and “the usual” eggs benedict breakfast in the last week and can joyfully say the Wienerstube is back to its terrific self. Harald is a charming, personable guy with decades of restaurant experience, and the staff is lovely; we had great service both times we were there. Go see for yourself. Enjoy!
