The slush days

Charles AgarAspen, CO Colorado

While looking skyward for that last snowstorm, or dusting off their bikes, hiking boots and kayaks for spring, everyone is missing out on my favorite: SLUSH!Like schusssing down a big snowcone, skiing in corn snow is heavenly to me, and those warm days early in the week were as epic as gliding through gobs of fresh powder in December. After a season of banging and battering my skis – and never sharpening, waxing or mending the huge gouges in the bottoms – I found myself carving like a pro on the slush earlier this week, just laying over on the edges and riding ’em around. And the thick stuff turns me into a hero in the bumps, the heavy snow slowing me down and softening the troughs so I can just point them straight through the moguls and let the knees absorb the shock.Slush aficionados are just as particular as powderhounds, and conditions have to be just right: Too cold, and it gets icy; too warm, and you’re water skiing – run into a sticky spot, and it that can send you over your tips of your skis. But when it’s right, it’s butter. So lately, I find myself in an unusual position of praying for warm sunny days, not fresh snow and cold, and I plan to sneak out of the office and get drenched in some good slush if the conditions are right. (OK, I’ll go if we get dumped on, too.)And I’m busy cobbling together a telemarking setup to chase corn snow for another few bonus weeks on Independence Pass.No friends on a slush day!
