The Silver Pen Award, June 2007
The Aspen Times Editorial Board has awarded Carbondale resident Dave Reed with the monthly Silver Pen Award, for writing the best letter to the editor in June. Here is his letter, which was printed June 5.Bonfire of our vanitiesDear Editor:I understand the city of Aspen is asking citizens what to do about the natural gas hearth. Why, the answer is obvious. We should replace it with a nightly bonfire of scrap lumber from local construction and demolition activity. This would generate heat from the otherwise wasted byproducts of our economy and would not produce any net greenhouse gases since wood is a renewable resource. By day, the big ugly burn pile would provide us with real time feedback on the impacts of our consumption.Dave ReedCarbondale
