The Silver Pen Award goes to…

Congratulations to Aspen resident James March for writing what The Aspen Times editorial board deemed the best letter to the editor in the month of January.

March’s letter, originally printed Jan. 17, addresses how the Aspen fire hearth, located in the commercial core, could become more environmentally friendly. Those who voted for this letter as the best of the month had this to say, “This is the first time I’ve heard a valid, efficient and low-cost alternative to the fire hearth,” and “The writer understands that there are many sources of hot air ” not only natural gas!” And also this: “This letter took two completely unrelated Aspen things ” the fire hearth and Andrew Kole ” and tied them together in an amusing way. Free association, Aspen-style.”

If you’d like the chance to win the monthly Silver Pen Award (which actually does get you a silver Aspen Times pen,) simply write a letter to the editor. Keep it under 500 words. Include your name, phone number and where you live, and email it to, or drop it by our office ” the purple building on Main Street next to the Hotel Jerome. Good luck!

Dear Editor:

I understand the city is about to sponsor a contest to decide what modifications to the mall fire pit will reduce Aspen’s contribution to global warming. My suggestion is this: Take out the logs, thereby creating a space in which Andrew Kole can kneel and spout his opinions. The resultant flow of hot air will, assuredly, be totally devoid of any warmth.

James March
