Amaranda Fregoso has been creating art for as long as she can remember.

“I remember drawing sunflowers with oil pastels,” said Fregoso, now a junior at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale.

Today, her work is far evolved from simple sunflowers.

“My work shows how delicate and strong people can be. To me, art is a way to express ourselves — it’s a way to let go,” she said. “Everyone has different emotions, and in my artwork I express those emotions through colors and portraits of people.”

In her exhibit “The Psychology of Emotions,” currently on display at the Wyly Arts Center, Fregoso delves into the subject head-on.

“I look at the picture and try to match it with the colors I believe match that emotion. Some emotions include sadness, joyfulness and anger,” said Fregoso, who hopes to study psychology and maybe art in college. “Emotions are a part of our lives — we have many in one day — and I love that I can show it through my art.”

For example, in “My Mother Told Me,” a charcoal and watercolor piece included in the exhibit, “it was very emotional because of her eyes, and I put a lot of work in that piece.”

“I put a lot of work in all my pieces, but I love how that one turned out.”

Fregoso participated in the Wyly Art Center’s Claudette Carter Art Mentor Program for young women, working one-on-one for the past 10 months with Carbondale artist Ingrid Magidson as her mentor.

“The biggest lesson I learned from Ingrid is that people can say whatever they want about your art but as long as you like it, that’s all that matters,” Fregoso said. “This was a great experience for me, and I am so glad I was chosen to do this.”

“The Psychology of Emotions: Paintings by Amaranda Fregoso,” is at the Wyly Art Center, 99 Midland Spur in downtown Basalt, through June 13.
