The new Israel

Dear Editor:

Last November I was in Israel for 17 days. Wow! Has Israel changed in 50 years? Tel Aviv looks like Miami Beach. New Jewish towns have paved streets, recreation centers and beautiful schools. The Arabs are Israeli citizens, one-third Christian, and two-third Moslem. Many Arab village roads are dirt, water is from a well, schools are “trailers.” Because Israel has no constitution guaranteeing equal rights, they treat the Arab citizens as “second- class” citizens.

Lieberman thinks Israel is getting ready to demand a loyalty oath by non-Jewish (22 percent of the population) to declare Israel as a Jewish State. How would we American Jews like to have to say America is a Christian country.

A new Israeli law says a “referendum” must be held to return stolen land, such as the Golan Heights and Palestinian land East of Jerusalem if Israel’s government decides to return Palestinian or Syrian land. Here’s how this might work: You request that I return a stolen painting. I say I will, provided my family votes 51 percent to return what I stole. If the vote (sometimes called a “referendum”) is less than 50 percent, then, of course I’ll keep that stolen work of art that is yours. As Dr. Laura would say, “end of debate.” Sorry, neighbor.
