The mayor apologizes
Dear Editor:
This letter must begin with an apology to the community and persons hurt by the Ponzi scheme I mentioned last week in discussing Aspen’s economy.
My remark was not intended to hurt, but I realize it was insensitive to the people who were hurt by Bernie Madoff’s criminal behavior, as well as their families, friends and acquaintances. Many of those who were offended by my comment have given generously in both time and money to the community. Many have spent their lives here. I value all of their contributions, and apologize for my insensitivity.
The point I was trying to make is that all of us have been hurt by the national recession. I support increased funding for marketing so that Aspen may broaden its visitor base and become more inclusive.
