The impact of Spellbinders

Dear Editor:

Last week you published a letter paying tribute to me as the founder of Spellbinders. I, in turn, would like to pay tribute to the whole community for being the springboard to the international expansion of the Spellbinders program.

First, I’d like to salute the many volunteer storytellers, of whom there are currently 30 in the Roaring Fork Valley, who share their time, stories and hearts with the children of this valley. There are well over 100 who have taken our training over the past 13 years, too many to name individually.

Another key to our success has been the support of visionary financial supporters, from city and county governments to the foundations, individuals and businesses of this valley. Finally, and perhaps the most essential element to our success, has been the receptivity and open-mindedness of the valley’s elementary school teachers and administrators, who, even in this era of testing and standards, have recognized the value of storytelling to their curriculum as well as to the character and cultural development of their students.

To paraphrase “it takes a village to raise a child,” it takes a whole community to develop a broadly beneficial program like Spellbinders. I am grateful for living in such a community.
