The hidden costs of illegals

Dear Editor:Interesting response from Mr. Patrick Hasburgh (Aspen Times letters, May 25) of “MexicoAspen.” Interesting town, too; I had no idea Aspen was a part of Mexico to begin with. Did you all know that? Second comment, regarding our tax-dollar supported illegals: For some reason, although they do pay local taxes for purchases, the cost of three bucks a day in free lunches, free preschool, free public school bus transportation for their individual kids, WIC, food stamps, TANF, tax-subsidized utilities and housing, free health care, etc. etc. etc., is never counted against them. “Free” meaning paid for by you and me, of course. That is not reported. And to cap it off, read the American Youth Policy Forum, Spring 2005, “The Paradox of Rising Teen Joblessness in An Expanding Labor Market.” It states, “New foreign immigration has remained high, the influx of many low educated young immigrants over the past four years is why teens and young adults have found work at much lower rates than before.” (www.aypf.org/forumbriefs/2005/fb3.18.05.htm) This report says exactly what Ms. Vickro was saying. And Mr. Hasburgh, I agree with our president doing nothing – but please remember sir, two wrongs do not make a right. Illegal immigration is wrong, and wealthy Mexico passing her poor to us is wrong too.And muchas gracias por precisar eso (for pointing out) that Aspen is a subdivision of Mexico. I learn something new every day.Marty LichGypsum
