The gift of time

Dear Editor:April 17-23 is National Volunteer Week. Please thank all the literacy volunteers who have shared the gift of time with a student.Without the help of 154 volunteers last year, Literacy Outreach could not exist and our students would not be as successful. Students such as Juan who received his citizenship; or Eleanor who learned how to ride the bus and get a job; or Mark, age 64, who voted for the first time; or Perla who was promoted to assistant manager of a local fast food chain; or Maria, a 10th-grade dropout who went form a part-time dead-end job to a full-time job with benefits. Maria’s paycheck has doubled and she is now able to support herself. Each month she sends a little money home to her parents in hopes that her younger brothers will not have to drop out of high school, too. There is no greater gift than the gift of time. Thank you to each and every volunteer who helped promote learning and literacy last year.Martha FredendallGlenwood Springs
