The Commons isn’t empty, it’s over-used

Dear Editor:

Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson and her petition gathers have been trying to get signatures on a petition to bring a vote, this spring, for the sale of our city owned Rio Grande Commons building, for a new art museum. They have been telling everyone that it is the old youth center which is an empty building and is not used. That could not be further from the truth! This building is occupied almost every hour on a daily basis. There is a popular pizza restaurant run by long time locals on the first floor, needed city and county offices on the second floor, and a public gathering meeting room on the third floor.

It is in constant use and is the only mixed-use facility that both the city and county governments have available for large capacity meetings. Elections are held here, valley meetings, community services of all kinds from dances, to theater, to prayer services. This centrally located, former youth center is one of the most over-used facilities we have in this town. It is our only mixed-use community commons we presently have.

To try to garner support for its sale is one thing, but they need to get the facts straight. Presently it serves a very basic need in many capacities: for our essential small nonprofits, which are equally important to the needs of this town, as is the need for meeting space use by our governmental entities. I find it highly questionable that the city and county could ever consider allowing selling off such a valuable community asset, when there is nothing to take its place.
