This wasn’t last minute, this was last second.Amid a frenzy of construction, inspections and finishing touches, Aspen’s new live music venue, Belly Up, opened Thursday night just in time for its debut party, Boarding For Breast Cancer.

“We expected a miracle and that’s what it is,” said Steve Weiss, the talent buyer for Belly Up. As of 7:30 last night, crews were still putting on the finishing touches. “We’ve got lights, now we’re working on sound,” said Belly Up owner Michael Goldberg.

“Mike’s good at pulling these things off,” Michael Goldberg’s brother Steve, said early Thursday evening. Goldberg said meeting opening night deadline came down to the dedication of the crews. “The key here is I think everyone associated with this project worked their hearts out at trying to make it happen,” Goldberg said. “They want to hear live music, and they understand you have to put your heart and soul into it.”

Weiss said the sound system and lights are “top notch” and he’s been in contact with numerous acts for future shows. He added that the opening of the Belly Up is a dream come true for Goldberg. “Yeah, I have a brother in the business, I really enjoy music, and the idea of being associated with live music and the people surrounding it -their creative elements and the connection they have with music – is something fascinating to me,” he said.
