This letter is to express my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the people of Aspen for the wonderful Memorial service held on Monday, May 27, at the Veterans Memorial site.
This was a dream come true to have such community involvement in the event. I would like to thank Mayor Klanderud and the City Council for their support and the Memorial Day proclamation. A special thanks to the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops for their participation in the placing of flowers on the veteran’s graves in the three Aspen cemeteries and for their participation in the flag and wreath ceremonies.
The Elks Veteran’s Committee did their magic and provided an excellent picnic for the veterans, friends and families at St. Mary’s. Thanks to John Summers, Twirp Anderson and Tom Paxton for the lively music.
A special thanks to Richard Lyon for his words of grace and hope, Jeannie Walla for her lovely singing, Dick Sundeen for Taps, Lt. Col. Merritt for Roll Call and Flaunders Field, Sheriff Bob Braudis for memories of Marty Hershey. Without the help of my right hand man, Howie Berg and my left hand Lady, Ann Owsley, this event would not have taken place.
What a special day and privilege it was for me to participate in a brief ceremony at the base of the Gondola to honor the 10th Mountain Division veterans.
I repeat my words of last year, YOU ARE THE BEST!
