The Best of Aspen

Nearly every week of the year, we put out The Aspen Times Weekly with the aim of keeping readers informed about this community – the upheavals and controversy as well as the beauty, character and history. We do the work, we pick the stories and we hope that readers find it useful and entertaining.

However, once a year we hand over the reins to you, the reader. We publish ballots asking you to choose your favorite businesses, ski runs, personalities and places. We let you make the decisions (admittedly as a huge, unwieldy group with no ability to coordinate or communicate) and then we put the results in the paper.

This issue is arguably our biggest annual reader-participation exercise, and judging from the hundreds of ballots that pour in each year, Aspenites remain as passionate and opinionated as ever about their town.

Especially because you, our readers, helped create this edition of the paper, we hope you’ll read it with interest and enthusiasm. For those who didn’t fill out a ballot, we hope you’ll check out this edition and use it to choose your next dinner destination, bike ride or even public bathroom.

Some of the questions are tried and true, as are some of the answers. This year, as we do each year, we deleted some categories and added new ones. Some of the categories drew varied and thoughtful responses, some of the categories frankly flopped. That’s the nature of this evolving, ever-morphing edition.

In the end, we hope it reflects the best that this town has to offer, and we hope it’s informative.

Here it is – our 2003 “Best of” edition. We feel it’s the No. 1 “Best of” in this best small town in America. Read on.
