The beautiful sound of silence

This past Fourth of July weekend was one-of-a-kind. In my 22 years with our fire district, private fireworks have been an ever-present background noise (and occasional fire starter) on this popular weekend. This past weekend, however, I don’t believe I heard a single detonation.

This was a remarkable display of a community participating in its own defense against wildfire. While we’re not out of danger yet (it will take some time to rebuild the fuel-moisture content this period of drought has inflicted on us), on behalf of the Aspen Fire Protection District and the firefighters of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department, thank you all for your support and cooperation.

Keep up the good work – and let it snow, let it snow.
