The bag stops here

Dear Editor:

We are so enthusiastic about the opportunity for Aspen to lead cities in the United States by reducing the number of plastic bags our grocery markets give out. This change will begin May 1.

We’ve both used cloth bags that we’ve collected from conferences we’ve attended and friends who gave them to us for the past six years or longer. These bags are like postcards. Sure, we forget our bags at home or in the car sometimes. Then the plastic is useful. But, fortunately, the grocery markets will still provide disposable paper bags. These cost 20 cents. This probably isn’t going to break the bank for anyone. Further, many grocery stores in the valley will keep a bin of used bags that can be shared.

Just ask the kids at our local schools how they feel about the reduction of plastic bags. They don’t complicate the issue or make it a personal one. Instead, they overwhelmingly agree that we should move toward reducing the amount of waste we create for the planet.

We agree. It makes us proud to live in a town that is taking steps to help us all enjoy a better quality of life. If anyone wants a free reusable produce bag or a reusable shopping bag, stop by the Environmental Health Department on the second floor of City Hall in Aspen.
